At Spiral Manufacturing, we know that it’s important to choose the right material for your specific application. That’s why we offer all of our products in a variety of materials, including stainless steel. Stainless steel has a lot of useful features that make it popular for many industrial applications. If you need a stainless steel spiral duct, you’ve come to the right place.

Stainless Steel Defined

There are more than 60 grades of stainless steel, which is a low-carbon steel alloy that contains at least 10% chromium by weight. It is the inclusion of chromium that gives stainless steel many of its unique properties, including corrosion resistance, durability, longevity, and ability to withstand extreme temperatures.

Corrosion Resistance

All stainless steel is extremely resistant to corrosion. Low alloy grades are able to resist corrosion in atmospheric conditions, while high alloy grades are able to resist corrosion in most acids, alkaline solutions, and chloride bearing environments, even at elevated temperatures and pressures.

Stainless steel is able to remain rust-free because of the way its alloying elements interact with the environment. When stainless steel is exposed to oxygen, the chromium in its composition combines with the element before the iron is able to do so, and a chromium oxide layer is formed. This chromium oxide layer is very corrosion resistant, and protects the underlying metal from rust formation.

Heat Resistance

In addition to being corrosion resistant, stainless steel is highly heat resistant. Different grades of stainless steel can withstand different temperature ranges, but all are able to perform well in impressive levels of heat. Most stainless steel can withstand temperatures as high as 700° F. When mixed with titanium alloy, it can withstand even more extreme operating temperatures, reaching as high as 1650° F.

Due to its unique properties, stainless steel is an excellent material for many different applications. It is a natural choice for both indoor and outdoor applications because of its high corrosion resistance, and for HVAC equipment applications because it is able to resist moisture and condensation. It is also a cost effective option thanks to its durability and longevity.
